The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is a federal agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Its primary role is to administer several critical national healthcare programs that provide health insurance coverage to millions of Americans. These programs include Medicare, the federal health insurance program for people 65 or older, certain younger people with disabilities, and people with End-Stage Renal Disease. In addition to Medicare, CMS works in partnership with state governments to administer Medicaid, which provides healthcare coverage to low-income individuals and families, and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). CMS also oversees the Health Insurance Marketplace established under the Affordable Care Act.
