Bonneville Power Administration (BPA), headquartered in Vancouver, Washington, is a self-financing federal agency within the U.S. Department of Energy. Established in 1937, its primary mission is to market wholesale electricity from federal hydropower projects in the Pacific Northwest and to operate one of the largest high-voltage transmission systems in North America. BPA is funded entirely through the sale of electricity and transmission services, not by taxpayer dollars. BPA provides power to a wide range of customers, including public and private utilities, cooperatives, and large industries across Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and parts of neighboring states. In addition to delivering reliable electricity, BPA plays a critical role in maintaining grid stability and integrating renewable energy resources. Its mandate also includes significant investments in fish and wildlife protection and mitigation programs to offset impacts from the federal Columbia River Power System.
